~Your hobby is probably more important than your job.~
Read that again…
Most people spend decades perfecting their careers while neglecting the very thing that makes them feel alive. We’ve been taught that our job is our identity.
“So…what do you do?”
It’s usually the second question someone asks after learning your name.
- Teacher.
- Engineer.
- Nurse.
- Electrician.
- Manager.
- Retired.
As if your occupation tells the world who you are. But here’s the uncomfortable truth.
~ Your job pays your bills…Your hobbies reveal your soul. ~
One puts food on the table. The other often puts life back into the person sitting at the table.
Think about the people you admire.
They aren’t memorable because they answered emails faster.
They’re remembered for building beautiful furniture…Painted incredible landscapes…Played music that filled a room…Restored classic cars…Cooked unforgettable meals…Made quilts that became family heirlooms…Wrote stories…Photographed moments no one else noticed…Created something that outlived them.
Here’s the irony.
Many people postpone those things until retirement. Then retirement arrives…and they realize they forgot how to create.
Some never even discover what they love because they were too busy becoming what everyone expected them to be.
What if we’ve been asking the wrong question all along?
Instead of…
“What do you do?”
Maybe we should ask…
“What do you create?”
That answer tells me far more about a person…Because creating changes us…It teaches patience…Humility…Persistence…Wonder.
Whether you’re shaping clay, tying flies, restoring an old truck, baking bread, carving wood, learning photography, or putting thousands of tiny ink dots onto a blank page…
- You’re participating in something deeply human.
- You’re making order out of chaos.
- You’re leaving the world a little different than you found it.
Your job may earn your paycheck, but your hobbies often become your legacy. So, here’s a question worth wrestling with this week:
If someone lost your résumé but found everything you created instead…would they know who you really were?
