A Fun, Year-Round Game for All Ages
Games are a great way to spend quality time with family and friends, but sometimes it’s hard to find one that’s both fun and engaging for everyone. This DIY Sharpshooter Archery Game is the perfect addition to any family gathering, birthday party, or afternoon of fun. Using simple materials, you can create an interactive target game that works for any occasion. Whether you’re celebrating a holiday or just looking for a new way to bond with loved ones, this is an activity that works for everyone. I made this game for my students to celebrate the Chinese New Year, but you can customize the theme any way you wish.
What You’ll Need:
• Red and Yellow poster boards (for a bold and fun background, but you can change the colors to match any theme!)
• Craft markers or paint (to create your horses and the intricate designs)
• Laminate “paper” or laminated circles (for the target boards)
• Rubber arrows (or a safe alternative for kids)
• A bow (a toy bow, like the one in the picture, or a craft bow you make)
• Printer & scissors (for creating your target designs)
• Clear tape or glue (for affixing everything)
Step 1: Setting Up Your Base
Start with a red poster board (or any color that fits the theme or season!) as your base. Use yellow accents to create intricate, flowing designs that complement the overall feel of the game. Want to make it fit a different occasion? Simply swap the color scheme to blue and green for a spring theme or orange and black for a fun Halloween twist.
Step 2: Crafting Your Targets
• Large Central Target: In the center, draw or print a pointillism horse design. (Download all 12 zodiac animals done in pointillism here) You can keep this to honor the horse imagery, or swap it out for a seasonal theme like a pumpkin for fall, or a snowflake for winter. This should be the centerpiece of the game and the most detailed. Add any symbol or design that matches your occasion.

• Smaller Targets: Around the central design, create six cartoon characters or animals (or even fun designs like stars, balloons, or seasonal motifs). You can make these by drawing, printing, and laminating. These should be fun and approachable for players of all ages.

Step 3: Assembling Your Sharpshooter Game
Arrange the targets evenly around the center of your board, attaching each one securely. Make sure they’re spaced out enough to offer a bit of a challenge. Laminate the circles to give them durability and to ensure they stand up to multiple rounds of fun! The laminated surface also helps the arrows “stick”. Note: If you want the arrows to stick with the suction tips, then the back needs to be rigid. If it is too flexible, the arrow may bounce off. An easy solution is to mount the game onto a solid wall.

Step 4: The Bow and Arrows
You can either use a toy bow and rubber arrows or create your own by attaching rubber suction tips to craft arrows. Make sure the arrows are safe for indoor use, and have a target point to aim at for the best experience. If you don’t have this option, you can easily cut holes in the backing and set up the targets as “flaps” that are shot down.
Step 5: The Rules of Sharpshooter
Here’s a simple guide to the rules of the game:
• Objective: Players aim at the targets using the rubber arrows and score points based on which target they hit.
• Scoring: Assign point values to each target depending on difficulty (e.g., the central design may be worth less points than outer targets because it is larger and easier).
• Fun Twist: Add a time challenge or turn it into a team-based activity for even more fun.
Conclusion: Fun for All Year Long!
Your Sharpshooter Archery Game is now ready for any celebration or family gathering! This DIY craft isn’t just for Chinese New Year…it’s a great way to bring people together for any occasion. Whether you’re celebrating a holiday, hosting a birthday party, or just looking for a fun weekend activity, this game will provide hours of enjoyment and healthy competition for the whole family.
